Mt. kailash (22,000ft) is revered as the abode of Lord Shiva. This extraordinary mountain is regarded as the ‘heart of the universe’ by Hindus, Buddhists, the Jains and the Bons. In the same periphery of this sacred mountain, twin lakes of Mansarovar and Rakshas Taal are situated which are supposedly a place for heavenly ablution. To Hindus and Buddhists, Kailash is the centre of the universe.
Kora (Circuit)
A single kora (circuit) of the mountain is said to erase the sins of a lifetime; ten the sins of an age, while 108 ensure Nirvana. However, these numbers aren’t meant to be taken literally. To gain Enlightenment, after one kora or a thousand your mind must be in touch with the gods and holy things. Most Tibetans prefer to walk about Kailash in a single day.
